Chinese Brush Art Exhibit – Through May 2016 (during library hours). Exhibit of colorful Chinese brush paintings by students of Jean Shen, who has taught many workshops and masters classes in brush painting and calligraphy.
Qi Gong – Every Monday @ 9:30 – 11:30 AM (except for May 30). Qi Gong (Chi Gong) is a simple preventative method of relaxing and harmonizing the body.
♫♫♫ Zumba for Special Needs and Beginners – Every Monday @ 1:00 – 2:00 PM (except for May 30). Led by Lis Garces (licensed Zumba® instructor since 2007),
Adult Yoga – Every Thursday @ 4:00 – 5:00 PM. Gentle exercises to aid flexibility and improve concentration. Bring your own mat or towel.
Chair Sit Yoga – Tuesday, May 3 & 17 @ 2:00 – 3:00 PM. Get fit where you sit! Chair yoga is a gentle form of yoga that is practiced sitting on a chair or standing using a chair for support.
CERT Meeting – Tuesday, May 3 @ 6:00 – 7:30 PM. CERT educates individuals about disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area and trains them in basic disaster response skills.
♫♫♫ Concert: Jarabe Mexicano – Wednesday, May 4 @ 6:30 – 7:30 PM. Incorporates a diversity of backgrounds and musical training into a vast Latin repertoire that includes traditional Boleros, Huapangos, Sones, Rancheras, Cumbias, Reggae, Doo Wop, and American Standards.
SD Book Arts – Thursday, May 5 @ 2:00 PM. Make a Zenspired Tunnel Book. These magical books combine arched window frames and an arrangement of flourishes that you will easily design from simple patterns and fill in with colors of your choosing. Digestive Health Lecture – Tuesday, May 10 & 24 @ 1:00 – 3:00 PM. Living well through good digestive health. Presented by: The Foundation for Wellness Professionals.
UCCA University City Community Association – Wednesday, May 11 @ 6:00 – 7:30 PM. This is a community meeting featuring updates from law enforcement, fire-rescue service, legislative and other community leaders. All are welcome.
OASIS: The ABC & Ds of Medicare – Thursday, May 12 @ 2:00 – 3:30 PM. Jill Lackey covers how Medicare works, who is eligible, what your options are and the time constraints.
♫♫♫ Accordion Club – Saturday, May 14 & 28 @ 9:30 AM – 12:30 PM. All are welcome! Second and fourth Saturday of each month.
UC Book Club – Wednesday, May 25 @ 2:00 – 3:00 PM. The Book Club will be discussing The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd.
Events for Children
Preschool StoryTime for Kids – Every Thursday @ 10:30 – 11:30 AM. Join us for stories, crafts, finger plays and songs.
LIVE! Homework Help – Every Tuesday & Thursday @ 2:30 – 4:30 PM. A volunteer will be at the library to help with homework.
Makerspace Craft Station – All week long (Monday – Saturday). A different craft station is available in the Children’s Area each week.
Tales for Tails – Saturday, May 7 @ 1:00 – 2:00 PM. Children can read aloud to trained and certified therapy dogs. “Tales for Tails” is designed to help children improve their reading skills and confidence in reading out loud. Children 8 and under must be accompanied by adult.
Challenge Island – Wednesday, May 18 @ 2:00 – 3:00 PM. Carnival Island’s Marshmallow Blast Mountain, the students will use their creative and critical thinking skills to create a Marshmallow Blasting Game using cups, poster board and balloons. Kendama Club – Every Wednesday @ 1:30 – 2:30 PM. Test your skills against others, learn new tricks and just have FUN!!!
Video Game Fridays – Every Friday @ 3:00 – 4:00 PM. Wii gaming with your friends, Get your game on!
Teen Writing Club – Wednesday, May 11 @ 3:00 – 4:00 PM. Each month the Teen Writing Club will talk about different techniques for improving your writing for school or that novel you’re working on. If you have questions about a current project or an essay you’re working on, there’s always time after the session to ask questions.
ACT Practice Test – Saturday, May 21 @ 10:00 – 2:00 PM. Gain valuable experience taking a full length mock test under realistic conditions to help better understand the test. Please call (858)552-1655 for information on how to sign up.
