Now that we’ve changed our clocks and we’re into the longer days of Daylight Savings Time, thoughts of emergency lighting and smoke detectors may not be top of mind.
The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department recommends checking smoke detector function once a month by pressing the test button. Replace batteries at least once a year; and replace the smoke detector after 10 years.
If your fire or smoke alarm sounds, don’t try to fight the fire yourself; get out of the house as quickly as possible. Call 9-1-1 as soon as you are out of the house.
If your detector makes a chirping sound, it usually indicates a low battery. Replace the battery with a fresh one immediately.
And, while you’re at it, Neighborhood Watch reminds you to check your flashlight and other battery powered lights and equipment once a month and replace batteries once a year.
