Mark Powell commentary, from UT: Cameras in the Classroom?

Share

Adjunct Professor and Real Estate Broker (and UCCA member) Mark Powell was recently published in the San Diego Union Tribune.

Union Tribune UTIn his commentary Powell states, “Most of us have seen the disturbing video footage of a South Carolina school police officer throwing a student across a classroom. The video was captured by another student’s cellphone camera. If it were not for the cellphone video, this incident could have gone unchecked or written off as just another student/law enforcement confrontation in a classroom.”

Powell believes that, “Cameras in the classroom could serve several purposes. They would allow law enforcement the ability to monitor every room from one central location. This capability would increase law enforcement’s ability to respond more effectively in the event of a school shooting, school lockdown or student hostage situation. Cameras in the classroom would also help school administrators monitor teaching and learning in the classroom, and the mere fact that behavior is being monitored via cameras may help teachers with classroom management.”

In addition to improved safety conditions at our schools Powell feels that, “Misunderstandings of discipline issues between students and teachers are common and school administrators are usually the ones who are left to sort out the details and conduct an investigation. Video footage would reduce the amount of time spent investigating wrongful claims, freeing up administrators to be instructional leaders on campus, not internal affairs investigators.”
