Focus on University City Parks and Facilities:
Tennis news UCRC: The University City Racquet Club (UCRC), located at 3585 Governor Drive, has started a Junior Tennis Program (youth aged 5 to 13) for beginners and intermediate players on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Currently, there are three instructors and two different groups using two courts. UCRC will expand its program this summer. The goal for these players is to get some exercise, learn some skills, and prepare them for high school tennis when they are eligible. UCRC plans to partner with the tennis coach at UC High School to support the high school’s tennis program. UCRC will donate some good used racquets and free stringing and regripping services for the tennis team. For more information, contact the Racquet Club by phone 858-452-5683or email at ucracquetclub@gmail.com.
Pickleball news at UCRC: In November 2021, the UCRC Board announced that they had decided to no longer offer pickleball at UCRC, effective March 1, 2022. According to the notice, the Board will continue to run UCRC as a tennis club, as detailed in the Articles of Incorporation and 501(c)(4) documents that state the specific purpose of the UCRC corporation is to foster and develop the game of tennis; encourage development of promising players of the community; and encourage competitive play with organizations of this and other communities.
The pickleball players are concerned about losing their ability to play at the Racquet Club and have taken their concerns to Parks and Recreation. A spokesperson for City Parks and Recreation said in an email statement that the City’s Parks and Recreation is aware of their request (to continue play at the Racquet Club) and are currently considering viable options for pickleball in the area. For more information from the pickleball players, contact Judy Sweet at jmssd19@gmail.com. For more information from the UC Racquet Club, contact Simon Shen at ucracquetclub@gmail.com.
In related pickleball news, the Standley Recreation Center outdoor basketball court will be re-surfaced and painted to include pickleball court lines.
