University Community Library on Governor announces its October 2019 event highlights

It’s October and time to “check out” these many free programs and events at the University Community Branch Library, 4155 Governor Drive. There’s so much to do and experience at our community libraries; today, it’s not just checking out books. And please note, all San Diego Public Library locations will be closed on Friday, October 11, for Staff Training.

Special Events

  • LibraryNExT: LEGO Mindstorm – In this workshop, students will learn the basics of robotics and build autonomous robots using the LEGO Mindstorm EV3 kit. Students will engage in both independent and group robotics competitions. No prior experience is required. Middle school grade required. Space is limited please RSVP online. Tuesday, October 1 @ 4:00 p.m.
  • Concert: Celtic Notes – Wednesday, October 2 @ 6:30 p.m. (live concert)
  • Public meeting: University City Community Association (UCCA) monthly meeting, Wednesday, October 16; networking at 5:30; meeting called to order at 6:00 p.m.

Monthly Events

  • Qi Gong (Chi Gong) is a simple preventative health method of relaxing and harmonizing the body. These gentle exercises are suitable for any age and health condition. Friday, October 4, 11, 18, & 25 @ 9:30 – 11:30 a.m.
  • Classic Book Club – . Thursday, September 12 @ 12:30 p.m.
  • Making Macramé – Join us for a fun class making macramé with Liz. Instructions and supplies are provided, and the project for the day is to make plant holders. Space is limited, please call (858)552-1655 to RSVP. Saturday, October 12 @ 1:00 p.m.
  • Jewelry Making, take home something you made yourself! Make your own earrings and/or other pieces of jewelry with an experienced crafter. Space is limited, please call (858)552-1655 to RSVP. Friday, October 18 @ 10:00 a.m. & Noon.
  • Zentangle is an easy-to-learn, relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Space is limited, please call (858)552-1655 to RSVP. Monday, October 21 @ 12:00.
  • OASIS: Richard Lederer, Union-Tribune Language Columnist : The Joy of Names—find out all you ever wanted to know about first names, last names, baby names, nicknames and more . Wednesday, Octoberber 23 @ 1:30 5:30 p.m.
  • UC Book Club will be discussing Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance. Wednesday, October 30 @ 2:00 p.m.

Children

  • Preschool Storytime for Kids; stories, crafts, finger plays and songs. Every Thursday @ 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
  • Live! Homework Help – A volunteer will be at the library to help with homework. Tuesdays & Thursdays @ 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Kid’s Craft – Space is limited, please call (858)552-1655 to RSVP. Monday, October 14 @ 3:00 p.m.
  • Special One Book One San Diego Story Time—Dreamers, by Yuyi Morales, followed by a special craft, October 28, 10:30am
  • Sugar Skulls – Come in and make some sugar skulls, which are a traditional offering for Day of the Dead. Each child will learn how to make sugar skulls and will complete a skull using their own design embellishments. Minimum age of 8 years old. Space is limited, please call (858)552-1655 to RSVP. Monday, October 16 @ 2:00 p.m.

Tweens/Teens
