For decades, University City United Church of Christ (UCUC) has been known for its annual blood drives coordinated by Ginger Taylor, first indoors at the Church and then migrating to a blood mobile in their parking lot.
But it was difficult to meet the “magic number” of 27 successful blood donations to justify the San Diego Blood Bank crew to come out on a Saturday morning, their busiest day, according to Ray Vance, UCUC’s self-described “Blood Man”.
After partnering with the owners of UC MarketPlace at Governor Drive and Regents Road to set up the mobile blood donation site in their parking lot in June 2014, Ray has grown the program to six times a year and the site averages 30 and 40 donations each date. Both are significant milestones.
Most of the donors at the UC MarketPlace site are University City residents and they have helped to grow the program to one of the best mobile blood donation sites in San Diego.
The next blood drive will be March 11 from 8:00am to 1:30pm in the parking lot of the UC MarketPlace.
