Courtesy of Sherri Lightner, City Council, District 1:
I hope everyone had an enjoyable summer. It’s hard to believe that it is already time to head back to school. We’ve had a very busy few months at City Hall, as the City Council voted to place 12 measures on the November ballot. In the coming months, I’ll provide more information about these measures. Please feel free to contact my office with questions about any of the city ballot measures.
I was fortunate to attend a summer concert in Standley Park where I had the opportunity to recognize all the community volunteers who put on so many great events and programs year round. The volunteers in the University City Neighborhood Watch program deserve special recognition for their efforts in making the community safer.
Another example of what makes this community such a great place to live is the annual “National Night Out” event, which was held in August in support of our firefighters and police officers. We all owe them our gratitude for their daily service and sacrifice.
A big thank you is owed to the 60 firefighters who responded to the brush fire near Nobel Drive and Town Center Drive in mid- August. Only two acres of brush were affected as a result of the fast acting Fire-Rescue Department.
Now is the time for homeowners who live along canyon edges to do a refresher on canyon fire safety tips. Visit the webpage www.sandiego.gov/fire/services/brush information. Please call the Fire Hazard Advisor to make a brush management complaint at (619) 533-4444.
In closing, I’m pleased to announce that the University Village Park Tot Lot is now under construction at the corner of Cather Avenue and Florey Street at Gullstrand Street. See attached photo of the ground-breaking ceremony. Thank you to all of the community members who have advocated for this project. This much- anticipated improvement project is expected to be completed in early 2017.
I hope everyone has a great end to the summer as we look forward to an action-packed fall.
Election note for Council District 1: Candidate Ray Ellis has withdrawn from the race, although his name will remain on the ballot. Congratulations to presumptive winner Barbara Bry.
