April 2025

From UCCA”s President Jemma Samala: I was out of town for most of March, and I can’t believe it’s April already – time for spring cleaning and rejuvenation of your energy. Easier said than done.

I was very happy to hear the re-establishing of the monthly Cars & Coffee (and donuts too), which will continue to be held the last Saturday of the month (see page 10). My partner Richard is a car guy, and gladly rode up in his British green Triumph motorcycle.

The hardest part for me will be the spring cleaning. Including, tidying up the garden, which grew wild while I was away (I guess we had some torrential rains). I have to get out the big shears to cut back some leaves.

Cleaning out your gardens also means clearing out the flammable materials in your Zone 0; the first five feet around your home. It’s important to have your home prepared for possible fires and during spring cleaning is as good a time to do so. See page 13 for some tips.

You could also ask SDFD Chief Robert Logan what he thinks about fire safety at our One-on-One talk with him, Tuesday, April 22, 6:00pm at the UC Library. You can send me questions in advance at: jemmasamala@gmail.com.

No matter what your spring cleaning to-do list looks like, you know it’ll be beautiful days up ahead in UC, and we can all help keep UC Clean (such as volunteering for the People for a Clean UC on April 13, 7:30am at Starbucks).See page 8 for Earth Day ideas too.

Oh, and help support UCCA with our own beautification projects by becoming a paid member or making a donation! Let’s all help University City stay clean, and remain “more than just a neighborhood!” It’s our home.

PS: Check out UCCA’s website, newsletter, and Save the Date for April for more news and events. I hope to see you out and about in University City this month.
