Pure Water San Diego has issued a University City Construction Alert: Starting at the end of May, construction crews will begin clearing and grading the work area on the north side of the railroad tracks for the construction of the Rose Canyon Tunnel shaft, as outlined in environmental documents for the City of San Diego Morena Northern Pipelines and Tunnels project in University City.

Once the shaft has been completed, crews will tunnel under the railroad tracks in Rose Canyon near University City High School. The Rose Canyon tunnel will connect to the receiving shaft currently under construction near Genesee Avenue and Centurion Square.

Working hours for this segment of tunnel work will be Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Construction will continue through Fall 2024.

The City and project team are committed to completing construction as efficiently as possible with safety as our highest priority, and the community’s patience and coordination are appreciated.

What to Expect:

  • Two-way traffic on Genesee Avenue will remain.
  • 24/7 access for emergency vehicles, residences and businesses will be maintained.
  • For safety reasons, please follow all posted signage. Please anticipate construction impacts such as traffic delays & construction noise.
