SDPD issues statement and press release to address University City Shooting / Homicide

In an email communication dated 2/18/2024 to the SDPD Northern Division Inland Captain’s Advisory Board from Captain / Commanding Officer Erwin Manansala, San Diego Police Department:

I hope this message finds you well, although we understand that recent events within our community may have left many feeling concerned and unsettled. I wanted to address you today regarding the recent shooting-related homicide that occurred in the University City community last night. First and foremost, our thoughts and condolences go out to the victim’s family and friends during this difficult time.

I want to assure you that the San Diego Police Department is fully committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of our residents. This incident is being treated with the utmost seriousness, and our dedicated team of Homicide investigators are working tirelessly to bring justice to the victim and their loved ones. I understand the concerns that arise in the aftermath of such events, and I want to provide you with the following information to address any apprehensions you may have:

  • Isolated Incident: Our preliminary investigation indicates that this incident is isolated and appears this was a targeted attack. We believe there is no immediate threat to the broader community currently. We believe it to be an unfortunate and specific incident with no indication of an immediate broader risk to public safety at this time.
  • Increased Police Presence: In response to the incident, you may notice an increased police presence in the community. This heightened visibility is a proactive measure to provide reassurance, deter potential criminal activity, and ensure the safety of all residents.
  • Community Collaboration: We recognize the importance of community collaboration in solving crimes and maintaining public safety. We encourage anyone with information related to this incident to come forward and assist us in our efforts in locating and apprehending the suspect.
  • Aggressive Pursuit of Leads: SDPD Homicide investigators are aggressively pursuing all available leads to identify and apprehend the suspect responsible for this heinous act. They are leveraging all resources at our disposal, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to bringing this suspect to justice.
