June 30, 2021: Unfortunately, the 2021 4th of July UC Celebration has been cancelled this year. We are hopeful that the Summer Concerts (perhaps in a modified format) will take place later in July. Summer events at Standley Park are dependent on the re-opening of the Standley Recreation Center to both the public and to our many volunteers who sponsor these long time University City traditions. For the most up to date information, contact the Standley Recreation center at 858-552-1652 and check for updates on our UCCA University City News website.

Please note: Due to continuing COVID-related restrictions and staffing challenges, events mentioned in the print newsletter and online are subject to change. Please check with the event organizer for the latest information.

The July/August 2021 print newsletter is available for download as a PDF at at https://www.universitycitynews.org/ucca-newsletter-archives/. Print copies will be available at the Recreation Center, the U City Coin Wash Laundromat, and the Community Library on Governor Drive on Thursday afternoon, July 1. This month’s cover stories feature UC Del Sol Softball and Vons’ Monopoly winner; this month’s back cover advertisers are Torrey Holistics and California Coast Credit Union.

Thanks to all our community contributors and to our advertisers and to our delivery volunteers … you are the neighbors and friends who make the print newsletter possible. Let’s support our local businesses. UCCA urges all members to refer to the advertising section our of print newsletter for current promotions from our local advertisers. The print newsletter is available as a PDF at https://www.universitycitynews.org/ucca-newsletter-archives/

From UCCA President Barry Bernstein (updated 06/30/2021): Happy Summertime Everyone. Unfortunately, the 2021 4th of July UC Celebration has been cancelled this year. We are hopeful that the Summer Concerts (perhaps in a modified format) will take place later in July. Summer events at Standley Park are dependent on the re-opening of the Standley Recreation Center to both the public and to our many volunteers who sponsor these long time University City traditions. On Saturday, August 7, at 2:00, we expect the traditional Banana Split Ice Cream Social event will begin…the free ice cream and toppings go fast so don’t be late. Thank you, Heimburger Family, for your traditional ice cream donation this year and the past 21 years!

Our public schools are scheduled to open the last week of August for full regular classes….and possibly some sort of distance learning. Once again that will depend on the achievement of “herd immunity” in San Diego and San Diego County health officials’ authorization. Maybe by July’s MLB All-Star game our Padres will be out of their “funk” and back into their winning ways. Some of you will be planning to do some long overdue traveling/vacationing and seeing the friends and families “in-person” for the first time in a couple of years. The many outdoor activities/venues associated with San Diego will once again be a most welcome change to normalcy.

I hope you have enjoyed our monthly U.C. quiz…This month’s “summer edition” will be the final quiz. Remember, there will NOT BE AN AUGUST UCCA newsletter and there’s no scheduled UCCA general meeting in August. We are meeting this July 14 via ZOOM…and are planning to have a regular in-person meeting in September. (fingers crossed). In the meantime, stay informed by going to our website: universitycitynews.org

There are currently vacancies on our Board, (corresponding secretary, parliamentarian), as well as needing assistance with our Christmas Tree/Menorah event, street banner program, and substitutes for our newsletter delivery team. Let me know if you can help. It’s just a few hours each month.

For our non-UCCA Members who read and enjoy our free/home delivered newsletter, I ask that you consider joining and become an active member/volunteer….We invite you to review the many activities/organizations UCCA supports (see our listed activities on our membership form in the print newsletter, page 13).

Support the community that you live in….consider volunteering and helping UCCA continue to be “more than just a neighborhood”. Have a fun, safe summer. Stay safe, stay well.

Remember to attend our July 14 ZOOM UCCA meeting. This is a public meeting and all are invited.
