Press Release : The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will hold a public meeting from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, March 10, at the Hyatt House Sorrento Mesa, 10044 Pacific Mesa Blvd., San Diego, California. The meeting is to discuss the findings of the environmental investigation that was conducted and the preferred response action based on those findings at Range Complex No. 1, Camp Matthews, a Formerly Used Defense Site located at the University of California, San Diego, and the La Jolla and University City communities of San Diego.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers began investigating the former Camp Matthews training area in 1988 through the FUDS program. Based on the findings of the recent remedial investigation, the Corps is proposing No Further Action for four areas consisting of 4,862.3 acres within Range Complex No. 1.
Comments on the Proposed Plan and the Corps’ recommendation are being accepted through March 27.
Please join us and learn about the investigation conducted on the site and speak to representatives from the Corps. Formal comments will also be accepted on the Proposed Plan.
The Formerly Used Defense Sites program was created by Congress under the Defense Environmental Restoration Program to clean up environmental hazards at formerly owned, leased, possessed or used Department of Defense properties. The Corps manages the FUDS program and the Corps’ Los Angeles District manages the former Camp Matthews training area FUDS projects.

mil/Missions/Formerly-Used- Defense-Sites/UCSD-Camp- Matthews-Range-Complex-No-1/ - Proposed Plan : Found on the Army Corps of Engineers page (reference above). Interesting reading if you have the time; includes additional maps (page 4 of PDF). It looks like our immediate neighborhood (east of Genesee and south of Rose Canyon) is outside the area of concern. The map looks like the areas in question are west of Genesee and north of Rose Canyon. See PDF at : https://www.spl.usace.army.
