On Thursday, Diane and Tom Ahern from University City (center left) and Corrine Busta of County Supervisor Kristin Gaspar’s office (center) joined community leaders from Scripps Ranch, Clairemont and other surrounding communities for a briefing and tour of the airfield fire department aboard MCAS Miramar.

All airfield firefighters are graduates of the Department of Defense Fire Academy, have Emergency Medical Technician certificates and additional specialized training in responding to airfield fires.

Firefighters demonstrated safety gear and drills and provided a tour of the equipment bay.

Community leaders also toured the weather station and learned of that department’s vital role in flight planning.

Editor’s note: Diane Ahern is UCCA vice president and serves on the Miramar Community Leaders Forum through the Miramar Community Liaison Office. Kristin Camper, Miramar community liaison, sponsored the tour and thanked UCCA for highlighting the MCAS Miramar Airfield rededication in the November print newsletter.
