Recruiting the next Chief of Police: University City workshop at Standley Park Thursday, October 5

Share

From the Office of the Mayor:

Community input is an integral component in the selection process for San Diego’s next Police Chief. During these community conversations, participants will provide their thoughts on key questions – top priorities for our next police chief and top characteristics/traits/experience needed in a chief.

The forums will use a structured, facilitated format designed to engage all participants and capture all input.

The community forums are being conducted solely by Mayoral staff, to assist the Mayor with his decision making in appointing the City’s next Police Chief. San Diego Charter section 57 provides that the Police Chief is appointed by the Mayor and the appointment is confirmed by a majority of the City Council.  The community forums are not being conducted by the San Diego City Council or by any City of San Diego Board or Commission.

In University City, a community forum is scheduled at Standley Recreation Center on Thursday, October 5 at 6 PM, 3585 Governor Drive, San Diego, CA 92122.

Spanish/English interpretation will be available at all workshops. The availability of other interpretation services is noted above. ASL will be provided upon request by contacting humanresources@sandiego.gov or 619-236-6313.

Those who are not able to attend, may complete the online survey until October 13 at https://www.sandiego.gov/police/about/next-police-chief

The City of San Diego has initiated the recruitment for the next Chief of the San Diego Police Department. Under the City Charter, the Chief of Police is appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the City Council. The ideal candidate must demonstrate qualities and characteristics that reflect our communities. San Diegans have a critical role to play in helping to recruit the next Chief of Police. Through community workshops and this online survey, community input will be used to target recruitment efforts when evaluating applicants’ experience, education, and skills, and to create interview questions. Please note that the survey results will be aggregated and the results may be made public.

The survey consists of a series of multiple choice and short answer questions:

  • Please select LEADERSHIP QUALITIES that you think are important when selecting the next Chief of Police.
  • Please select QUALIFICATIONS that you think are important when selecting the next Chief of Police.
  • The new Chief of Police will need to immediately balance PRIORITIES of the San Diego Police Department and the community. Please select priorities that you deem “Highest Priority.”
  • What efforts are currently underway in the San Diego Police Department that you would like to see continued under the new Chief of Police?
  • What new initiatives would you like to be pursued in the San Diego Police Department under the new Chief of Police?
  • Is there anything else that the City of San Diego should consider when selecting the next Chief of Police?
