Courtesy of Todd Gloria, Assemblymember, 78th District:
As the son of a hotel maid and a gardener, I know the importance of hard work. I saw it first-hand growing up and continue to see it every day in San Diegans, who do an honest day’s work to provide for their families.
Labor Day has always been a special day for me and my family. In addition to being able to take in the last days of summer with loved ones, Labor Day is about reflecting and acknowledging the contributions of our workers across California and the United States.
The labor movement is an important part of our history. Without it, there would be no middle class, no eight-hour workday, no 40-hour workweek, no child labor laws, or many other rights workers have earned over time. That’s why I am proud to stand with our working families on Labor Day and every day.
Make no mistake; we still have much more work to do. Too many of our workers who are on the job full-time still live in poverty. Others still experience resistance to their right to collectively bargain and most workers do not have security and dignity in retirement. These are all issues that I continue to work on in the Legislature.
As always, it is a pleasure to serve as your Assemblymember.
