Standley Middle School student wins award at national You be the Chemist Challenge

Nikhil Seshadri, a resident of University City from Standley Middle School, represented California at the National “You be The Chemist Challenge” in Washington DC on June 19, 2017 and won second place.

Approximately 55,000 middle school students across the nation participated in this competition. Nikhil received a $6000 scholarship and a trophy.

The “You be the Chemist Challenge” is sponsored by The Chemical Education Foundation in Washington DC and it is an interactive academic contest for middle school students on fundamentals of chemistry and their real-world applications.

Nikhil developed an interest in Chemistry when he was in fifth grade at Spreckels Elementary School. He participated in a local challenge in San Diego and was selected to participate in the statewide contest that was held in Anaheim on April 23, 2017. Nikhil was declared the California State Champion and represented California at the National Challenge at Washington DC.

Forty two students representing various States participated at the National Challenge. Nikhil will go to University City High School in Fall 2017. He is a member of the San Diego Math Circle.

San Diego student wins 2nd place in national ‘You Be the Chemist’ Challenge.  Nikhil Seshadri was selected from a pool of 55,000 middle school students across the nation.

Nikhil Seshadri, an 8th grade student from Standley Middle School engaged in a brainy battle with an elite group of 42 middle schoolers, chosen by the Chemical Educational Foundation.

Students in grades five through eight answered complex chemistry questions until a winner was named.
