The San Diego City Council met on December 5, 2016, to take up the proposed amendment to the University Community plan to remove the Regents Road Bridge and the widening of Genesee Avenue.

People from both sides of the issue were well represented. Speakers were given one minute each to present. Longer presentations required other speakers to cede their time. Longer presentations by The Citizens for the Regents Road bridge and by Friends of Rose Canyon were presented.

Citizens for Regents Road Bridge presented more than 3000 signatures supporting the building of the Regents Road Bridge. UCPG also presented a longer presentation supporting the plan amendment to remove the bridge.

The final two speakers were Harry Mathis, former council member and former UCPG chair speaking for the bridge, and a very cute 6 year old speaking against the bridge.

After three hours of testimony, the remaining speakers opted not to speak in order to move the matter to a Council vote.

Council members Lightner, Alvarez, and Sherman spoke in favor of the amendment. Council members Cates and Zapf expressed concern about the impacts to Clairemont. Council members Kersey, Cole, and Emerald did not comment. Council member Gloria was absent because he was in Sacramento being sworn in as state assembly member.

The council vote was: Lightner, Emerald, Alvarez, Sherman, Kersey and Cole voting yes for the plan amendment to remove the bridge from the community plan. Council members Cate and Zapf voted against the amendment.
