November message to University City

Courtesy of UCCA President Barry Bernstein:

Barry BernsteinWith our National, state, and local elections nearly over and the many state and city ballot tax measures that affect us and our communities still yet to be decided, we can only be hopeful that these decisions will result in improving the quality of life for all of us.

Now we can rest our politically overworked brains and attend to some mundane responsibilities of the season…setting our clocks back an hour, turning on our home heating, getting needed “flu” shots, supporting our favorite football teams, and of course preparing for the Thanksgiving holiday.

UCCA will have its yearly election of officers as part of its General meeting on Wednesday, November 9. Some very important speakers have been invited to present information at this meeting regarding the UTC/Westfield expansion process, the proposed trolley rail line down Genesee, and a brief legislative update from former California Speaker of the House, Toni Atkins. It’s the one meeting everyone should try to attend. Come early to vote…and to get a good seat. Voting is from 5:30-7:30 for members.

A special note of recognition and thanks to our City Council representative Sherri Lightner and her most able community representative Kyle Heiskala, as they turn their governing responsibilities over to Barbara Bry, our new District 1 presumptive winner. UCCA has appreciated their support and leadership these past years in making and keeping University City the great community that it is.

Other stuff…Look for our new street pole banners…there will be additional banners in 2017. UCCA continues to try to establish productive “talks” with Miramar MCAS…particularly after last month’s “emergency” landing reminded some of the 2008 tragedy…Genesee traffic is awful during commuting/school hours…no viable solution…we have to live with these conditions and try to make our travel plans on Genesee with that in mind. On that same topic see the article related to the Community Plan Amendment PEIR on page 12 of the print newsletter.

UCCA “salutes” our many local veterans who have served our nation…see page 9. Friday, December 9 will be the UCCA/Standley Park Tree/Menorah Lighting…mark your calendars for this wonderful community event.

As the 2016 year draws to a close, I want to thank our Board members and our nearly 200 volunteers for a job well done. Without you the many things that make UC so special would not happen. Keep up the great work.

And to our over 600 families that are UCCA members…Thank you so much for your interest and support…we couldn’t do/support all the wonderful and important things that make U “more than just a neighborhood”. Have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving!
