Courtesy of UCCA President Barry Bernstein:
Fall season has arrived…and we didn’t experience our usual few very hot September days this year.
Fire/rescue team members from our local Squad 56 fast response team, based on Governor Drive, paid a surprise visit to our September UCCA meeting. Station 56’s special vehicle is required to back into its drive-out position at the fire house station at 3034 Governor Drive. Please be aware and patient if such a circumstance occurs when you’re driving west on Governor Drive.
We hope you enjoyed Oktoberfest on October 1st at Standley Park to help EdUCate! provide funding for our five public schools in University City.
For some, this time of year is when we figure out what sort of cool weather vegetables to plant or how to manage the carpools for school and soccer weekends. For others, it might be seeking a way to stay calm when barraged by all the political TV advertising/phone calls for the gazillion or so confusing city and state proposed measures. Ballot pamphlets can be very helpful. For me, a mail-in ballot has been my choice for years. It’s said that once your mailed in ballot is received, telephone calls will drop dramatically. Can’t say that for U.S. mail however. Unfortunately, candidates for office at all levels of government this year have been affected by the negative/personal approach at the National level. One wonders, if whomever is elected as our next President, will Congress get anything of importance done!
UCCA’s new street banners (provided by the grants we received from SD County Supervisors) should be installed by mid-October. We hope you like them, as they are designed to feature the wonderful amenities and lifestyles of University City families.
The new street crosswalk continental patterns were completed this past month…and UCCA is working with the city to enhance those crosswalks with colorful and appropriate designs.
South UC projects, “ImagineUC 2020” and the Marcy Park Improvement plans are moving forward. Curie Elementary is looking into a “joint-use” grass field option with City Schools and the City’s Park and Recreation. A public meeting on October 27 at the Standley Park Recreation Center is scheduled to provide for community input. Also UCCA will be painting the electrical boxes this month that SDG&E replaced last year.
Please note UCCA’s meeting date has been changed to October 19, 4:00 PM from October 12 to accommodate the many Jewish families observing Yom Kippur. In this month’s issue you will find our 2017 UCCA membership form. We invite/encourage you to join UCCA. We will be inserting a special membership form/envelope in our November issue when our official 2017 membership drive begins.
Election of officers will be held at our special general meeting in November. (See election/nomination information on page 3.) Have a great month of October and have a fun and safe Halloween. Remember, “University City is more than just a neighborhood.”
