An open letter to Dave Roberts, San Diego County Supervisor, District 3, from Barry Bernstein, UCCA President, and Diane Ahern, Vice President:
Thank you to you and your office for helping University City Community Association (UCCA) with our grant applications for a Community Enhancement grant and a Neighborhood Reinvestment Program grant through the San Diego Board of Supervisors and for recommending the funding of both grants.
- The Community Enhancement grant will be used to design attractive and uniform street banners to welcome visitors to University City and highlight key gateways to the area as well as promote the community as a place to dine, shop and play. The banners will assist visitors to the area with wayfinding by providing place identification.
- The Neighborhood Reinvestment Program grant will fund banner production and installation.
- The Community Enhancement grant will also be used to design and paint electrical transformer boxes. The project integrates art into existing civic architecture and provokes public engagement in the neighborhood and appreciation for public art. This project recognizes and celebrates local artists and contributes to the vitality and appeal of the streetscape.
UCCA provides and promotes the civic, cultural, social, educational and recreational development and improvement in University City. UCCA also provides a forum where the interests of residents may be expressed and contributions made to the protection of life and property in the community.
UCCA connects neighbors with each other and the University City community through a variety of outlets such as a monthly print newsletter, the University City News website and through social media. UCCA also hosts a monthly public meeting, also attended by elected officials, first responders, and local leaders, at the University Community Branch Library.
UCCA helps to sponsor many local events such as the 4th of July Celebration, Summer Concerts, and Holiday Tree Lighting, and assists with local public schools fundraising activities. UCCA also sponsors other community beautification projects such as updating and maintaining street medians.
The County of San Diego Community Enhancement and Neighborhood Reinvestment Program grants will allow UCCA to continue serving the community while enhancing its support for tourism and economic development.
We look forward to partnering with the County of San Diego to build a stronger identity and community in University City, where we’re more than just a neighborhood. Thank you again.
Note: County Supervisor Dave Roberts will attend UCCA’s Volunteer Recognition Night to be held during the July 31 Summer Concert. UCCA’s grant application team included Deanna Ratnikova, from Doyle Recreation Council, as well as Merle Berman and Barbara Gellman from UCCA’s Beautification Committee, Barbara Henshaw from the Banner & Special Events Committee, Don Hotz, Treasurer, and Karen Martinez, Recording Secretary.
