Inside and Out: Standley Park Facelift Underway

Standley Park has been undergoing a mini facelift! Not one to waste time, Natashia Pierre became the Center Director March 2015 and the facelift began in May 2015.

Many projects have been completed, several are in process and there is also a ‘to do – wish list’! The process has been facilitated by Area Director Johnny Chou, the supervision of Natashia Pierre, completed by the City or Center staff and with the support and backing of the Board of Directors (B/D) of the Park and Recreation Council.

The completed projects include:

  • painting of the exterior trim and complete painting of the interior (by the City)
  • ceiling tiles replaced (City, funded by B/D)
  • new signage (City)
  • gazebo painted (Center Staff)
  • play equipment inspected (Contractor) and items replaced (City)
  • planters cleaned (Staff) and new bark spread (provided by the City, work by the Staff)
  • lobby furniture (funded by B/D, assembled by Staff)
  • canyon area behind Center cleaned and the encampment removed (California Conservation Corps).

Projects in process include new counters throughout the Center, the long-awaited Marquee and an upgraded PA system (all funded by the B/D). Work requests have been submitted for new baseboards and the replacement of the damaged skylight.

And the ever growing ‘to do – wish list’ includes: additional drought tolerant plantings, additional kitchen upgrades, replacement and upgrade of parts of the play equipment.

The Standley Park Recreation Center was dedicated 38 years ago, in 1978. That’s old! It will continue to need the tender loving care that the City of San Diego, the wonderful Recreation Center staff and the University City community is providing.

The next time you visit Standley Park and Recreation Center, take a look at its mini-facelift and say thank you to Center Directior Natashia and the Recreation Center staff. Looks good!

Editor’s Note:  Center staff member Jesse recently pointed out some of the changes which are pictured in the accompanying slide show.
