Looking forward to Summer:

It’s summer…and here’s wishing you a fun, safe, and wonderful July 4 weekend and for another successful community “Celebration” at Standley Park. It is George Odero’s final chairmanship of this event and UCCA salutes him for a job well done. And UCCA would like to congratulate San Diego City Council President, Sherri Lightner on her recognition by the UCSD Alumni Association for her contribution to the city of San Diego.

As many know next school year our public schools will be opening on Monday, August 29, before the Labor Day Holiday…which I can’t remember ever happening. In this “school-shortened-vacation” summer there’s much to do and enjoy in University City. Our front page July/August issue features many of these fun-filled family activities that we encourage you to explore.

On Tuesday, July 12, 6 PM the University Community Planning Group, (UCPG), will convene a very important meeting at which time discussion on the draft Transportation EIR will take place. Public comments on this report must be submitted by August 1. Also there will be a report detailing the amounts of various builder fees/balances that have accumulated over the past twenty years that are earmarked for University City.

UCCA will be alive and well this summer. UCCA’s next regular meeting will be meeting on Wednesday, July 13, 6 PM at our Community Branch library, the day after a very important meeting at UCPG. Information related to the draft EIR traffic study will be explained at this UCPG meeting, along with a financial report related to accumulated builder’s fees.

On Thursday, July 28, the Standley Park Recreation Council will convene a community wide meeting, beginning at 7:00pm, to discuss the anticipated approval of the “Imagine UC 2020” project. All interested parties are invited.

UCCA’s many volunteers, (Neighborhood Watch, Newsletter delivery volunteers, and others), will be recognized during the intermission at the Sunday, July 31 summer concert at Standley Park. Rifftide is the headliner; please mark your calendars.

On Wednesday, August 3, UCCA will be sponsoring the annual San Diego Police “National Night-Out” community event. You can meet your local police and fire-rescue staff at the Spreckels parking lot adjacent to EdUCate’s food trucks on Governor Drive.

Looking back on June news:

At last month’s Wednesday, June 8 UCCA meeting, our special guest speaker, Colonel Jason Woodworth, the commanding officer at Miramar, Marine Corps Air Station, spoke of the Marine’s training mission at the base. The Colonel stayed to answer questions about trespassing and flight noise/safety concerns.

Also at this meeting, UCSD planning department representative, Anu Delouri explained some of the issues related to the “explosion” of growth on the campus. She also extended an invitation to interested UCCA members to serve on their long range planning committee.

On Tuesday, June 14, UCCA was proud to attend the SD County Board of Supervisors’ meeting to apply for a Community Enhancement Grant. This grant will help pay for new street banner designs and our electrical box painting costs.

On Thursday, June 23, UCCA’s beautification committee members met with the CEO/owner of the UC Marketplace shopping mall, Nancy Zytko and the property manager, to discuss the maintenance and enhancements of the Governor Drive medians in front of their retail location.

Reminders: UCCA’s 2016 membership drive is coming to an end…we will begin anew in October. No UCCA newsletter in August. Have a great summer. Thank you to the many of you who support our efforts in making and keeping University City “more than just a neighborhood.”
