To Vote or Not to Vote

Your Vote CountsCourtesy of Vince Reardon:

I teach at the Art Institute of California. Recently, I asked a class of 20 university students, primarily Millennials, if they would vote in the November Presidential Election. Only three said they would.

When I asked why most wouldn’t vote, I received a laundry list of common complaints: no choices, the system’s rigged, my vote doesn’t count, I can’t be bothered.

Frankly, I was surprised. I assumed that more students, energized by Bernie Sanders’ candidacy, would be eager to vote for him. But voting wasn’t important to this group of disgruntled students.

They’re not alone. Lots of registered voters of all age groups don’t vote. For example, in the 2012 Presidential Election only 57 percent of all registered voters cast ballots. In that election 17.5 percent registered voters said they didn’t vote because “they were too busy.”

Many simply couldn’t leave work to vote on Election Day, which has prompted some to call for a national holiday on Election Day. Call me old school, but I think we all should vote, if for no other reason than to let the political elites know what we think of them.

This Presidential Election is critical, especially in regards to the Supreme Court. Whoever wins in November will reshape for decades the direction of the Court, where four Justices are expected to retire in the next few years.

If you care about your country, if you care about the profound impact the next Supreme Court will have on the country, I urge you to vote!

Voters interested in casting their ballots early for the June 7 Presidential Primary Election can now do so at the County Registrar of Voters office located at 5600 Overland Ave. in Kearny Mesa.

Ballots were mailed to those registered to vote by mail beginning on May 9, 2016.

In California, the deadline to register to vote for any election is 15 days before Election Day. The deadline to register to vote in the June 7 primary is May 23.
