UCLL Opening Day Tradition Continues

UCLL 2016 1UCLL 2016 2Opening Day! There is not a day of the year I enjoy more. The Standley Band directed by Mr. Marcus leads the parade march, as the teams follow in a line towards the opening day ceremonies on the infield. You can count on seeing the brown and yellow of Padres Jerseys from the past, on future MLB hopefuls. Standley Park, the heart of our community is the location of a rite of passage every spring for University City Little League baseball players.

This year the smiling players sprinted through a new UCLL logo archway lined by baseball players from USD, the Padres Pad Squad and the board members who work countless volunteer hours to make the league possible. The Little League Pledge was read by a representative from each age division, the National Anthem was sung by Hyugo Horton, and all seems good in the neighborhood again because baseball is back.

Zachary Preston threw out the first pitch to Noah Best. Zachary is the grandson of former UCLL president Pat Preston who passed away a few years ago. To see Zach out on the field being coached by his dad Ryan a former UCLL player is special. It unites our community through generations of volunteers and players who enjoy and have enjoyed the unique opportunity little league provides.

Last but not least the UC tradition of the Otter pop run. All players in the t-ball division race to get an otter pop after the ceremony and get “energized” for their first game.

University City Little League is a 100% volunteer group that teaches boys and girls of all ages the value of teamwork, sportsmanship, and community involvement. Go to http://www.ucll.org/ for more information.
