April is here, and it seems that it came so fast this year! Now that we have changed our clocks to “spring” forward, enjoyed St. Patrick’s Day, and recent Easter holiday gatherings, U.C. families can look forward to good things continuing to happen in April besides the ritual of “Spring” cleaning.
UCCA membership dues are so important, it’s the only way we can support the many school and community events listed in this month’s newsletter. So if you haven’t joined UCCA…please take a moment to do so and send in your membership application.
The Padres season has begun, and NCAA basketball will be crowning a 2016 tournament champion. Congratulations to our Aztecs played so well at times, but didn’t get the invitation to the “big dance” this year.
And this April, the Marcy Park Improvement Initiative, with co-chairs Ruth DeSantis and Don Hotz, will be seeking your support. Refer to the April print newsletter for details.
Passover starts on April 22…so those celebrants need to watch for those big boxes of matzo on sale at your supermarket!
JUNE PRIMARY/UCPG ELECTION INFORMATION: At the time of my writing, the City Council District 1 position has five declared and verified candidates. In our May newsletter we are planning to provide a short bio and platform statement for each candidate. For the position of San Diego City Schools Board of Education Trustee, in which resident and incumbent John Lee Evans is seeking re-election, we will do the same. We recently learned that there will be five candidates running for the position of City Attorney.
In the event no single candidate receives a majority of votes for any elected position, then the top two vote getters will have a run-off in November’s general election. UCCA, in conjunction with the San Diego League of Women Voters, has tentatively scheduled a “Candidate’s Forum” on Wednesday, October 5 at University City High School. Mark your calendars!
Congratulations to Nancy Groves and Nan Madden for winning their respective position elections as South University Community Planning Group UCPG representatives. Nancy writes our UCPG newsletter column.
UCCA has applied for and is in the process of becoming part of the County’s “Live Well San Diego” coalition of organizations and businesses. Thanks to Diane Ahern, our vice-president, and volunteer grant writer, Deanna Radnikova, for their expertise and effort in making this happen. UCCA is very proud to be the first community association in the East and North Central San Diego County Regions to become part of this coalition. Refer to the April print newsletter for more about Live Well San Diego. Diane and Deanna are also submitting grant applications to the County for providing funds to pay for our Governor Drive electrical box painting and street banners.
Have a wonderful April…drop in to see what we’re doing at our April 13th meeting. UCCA needs and welcomes your support. Remember, “We are more than just a neighborhood.” ~ Barry
