Spring is here as 2016 speeds by! It has been a productive first three months of the year with many notable actions by the City Council and improvements in University City to report.
For its first full month of operation, University City’s new fast response squad, called Squad 56, had 79 total responses in February. Over 80% of those responses were for medical calls with an overall average response time of 6 minutes and 10 seconds.
In other fire station related news, the University Community Planning Group voted unanimously to approve preliminary designs for Fire Station 50, which will be located at Shoreline Drive and Nobel Drive.
At the end of February, the City Council approved the creation of an Urban Agriculture Incentive Zone. This allows owners of vacant properties to receive a property tax reduction if the parcel is used for agriculture such as a community garden. Parcels that qualify must be a minimum of 0.1 acres and a maximum of 3 acres as well as be in a zone that already allows for agricultural use.
Additionally, an agreement between the City and Local 911, the Lifeguard Union was approved, which will extend presumptive illness coverage to full time Lifeguard employees for illnesses contracted on the job such as Pneumonia, Tuberculosis, exposure to biochemical substances and Meningitis.
In March, a batch of updates to the City’s Land Development Code was approved. More time will now be required for the noticing of projects after an application is submitted. The City will also be changing regulations to make it easier for projects such as charter schools, electric vehicle charging stations, and home occupations.
Lastly, thank you for the ongoing feedback to our office about neighborhood streets. New ‘no turn on red’ signage has been installed by City transportation engineers at the intersection of Regents Road and Governor Drive as the result of requests from local residents.
