From the San Diego Union Tribune, published on December 14, 2015.
Spurred by numerous reports of drones [unmanned aircraft systems or UAS] flying near jets and airports, the federal government will require that the aircraft be registered to make it easier to identify owners and educate amateur aviators.
The move, announced Monday [December 14] by the Federal Aviation Administration, comes at a time when the agency is receiving more than 100 reports per month about drones flying near manned aircraft.
The FAA prohibits drones and model airplanes from flying higher than 400 feet or within 5 miles of an airport.
Owners can register unmanned aircraft at http://www.faa.gov/uas/registration/ starting [December 21]. Rules can be viewed at http://www.faa.gov/news/updates/media/20151213_IFR.pdf
